Why Do Our Chairs Range from $125 to $1,250!?
A common question we get is “how much do your chairs run?”. This is a fair question. It’s a difficult question to answer for many of our products, but it’s most difficult to answer when it comes to our chairs. So why do our chairs range from $125 to $1,250?
We partner with about a dozen different dining manufacturers. The commonality between them is that the products offered are all solid wood because we want to give you the best value and we know that solid wood is the way to go for a sturdy dining chair to be enjoyed for generations.
It is easiest to break down the chair offerings into three categories: factory finished, custom finished, and American made.
Our factory finished chairs are typically constructed of solid parawood. Parawood is a tropical hardwood comparable to oak and it grows in places like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. Two of our manufacturing partners have set up manufacturing in these areas to harvest this wood and produce furniture from it. Parawood trees mature in about a year so not only is it a renewable resource but its large supply allows for a great price point. Some of our collections are mass produced so it gives limited options on style and color but they are able to produce a large quantity in less time which creates a much better price.
Here is an example of a mass produced, factory finished imported chair. It’s solid parawood and only available in this rustic brown finish. It’s $125 per chair. We have a large selection of chairs like this so if you are looking for a simple, solid chair and you aren’t needing it to be a specific color then this might be a great option for you.
The next category is our Custom Finished chairs. These, too, are made of solid parawood with a slightly beefier construction and they come to us unfinished which gives us the opportunity to finish them in any color. Since Woodcraft Furniture has on-site custom finish shops we are able to provide these solid wood chairs in any color. We have a variety of standard stains and we work with any Sherwin Williams paint color to create unique, one of a kind custom chairs. This collection also offers a wide variety of fabric selections for the seats.
This chair is an example of a solid parawood chair that is custom finished. It’s $250 with a wood seat and it goes up from there if you add custom upholstery options for the seat.
The last category is our American Made chairs. This gets tricky. Yes, our imported chairs are supposed to be less expensive than our American Made chairs, but because of the cost of freight and our creativity we can offer some of our American Made chairs at similar pricing to our imported ones. The American Made chairs are available in a variety of domestic hardwoods including red oak, white oak, cherry, maple, hickory, and walnut. Pretty much all of the chairs being produced in America are made in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In order to minimize the cost of freight, we run our own truck to the Indiana manufacturers which allows us to offer their products at a very competitive price. This chair, which is $275, is an example of that.
Our American Made chair manufacturers also have a wide selection of fully upholstered chairs and this is where it can get pretty expensive. These chairs are made to order and the custom upholstery process is all done by hand and they offer a wide variety of fabric options. Adding upholstered chairs to your dining set, if even just the chairs on the end, really adds an elegance and comfort to the whole set. The majority of these chairs range from $500 to $750, but the chair that is $1,250 is unique. It’s constructed of solid barnwood (the process to harvest and manufacture with solid barnwood is complicated) and the fabric is genuine leather.
So there you have it! Don’t worry, this is not the answer we will give you if you were to ask us this next time you stop in and see us. We will not bore you with the details, but I hope you’ve enjoyed this peak into our world of Real Wood Home Furnishings.
