How to Create the Perfect Living Room: 3 Simple Tips
Whether you’re moving into a new home or redecorating your current space, it can be challenging to create the perfect living room. Everything from your living room furniture to the artwork on your wall should work together to create a space you feel comfortable in.
But how do you create the perfect living room? Here are three simple tips to help you get started.
1. Choose a Layout for Your Living Room Furniture
Choose a layout for your living room. Create conversational areas and establish a focal point for the room. The focal point can be anything you want – the television, the fireplace, a piece of art or an architectural element. Use the focal point as a guide to arranging your furniture.
Avoid putting your furniture up against the wall. Instead, bring your sofa and chairs closer together, so it’s easy for guests to sit close and have conversations.
Rather than having your furniture faced away from each other, think of ways to make your living room more sociable. For example, arrange sofas so that they’re facing each other. If you only have one sofa, bring in an armchair or two.
If you have an especially large living room, try breaking it up into smaller areas that can comfortably sit two to six people. Dividing your space creates little spaces for conversation, allowing for a more intimate feel even in a large room.
Additionally, make sure that there’s enough space between your furniture to create obstacle-free walking paths.
2. Don’t Forget Storage
Every living room, no matter how big or small, should have some sort of storage. Today, you have so many options for storage, from ottomans to tables with hidden cubbies. Choose solutions that work best for your lifestyle and needs.
- TV stands are great for storing DVDs (if you still have those!) and other miscellaneous things you may use when spending time in the living room.
- Bookshelves are great for storing books, but you can also use them to display little knick-knacks or even vinyl records. Some units have drawers and cabinets that boost your storage without taking up additional space in the room.
- Furniture with storage. Many pieces of modern furniture now have convenient storage compartments. These are especially beneficial for small living rooms where space is a hot commodity.
Having just the right amount of storage makes your living room more functional and comfortable while eliminating clutter.
3. Choose Your Colors Wisely
Don’t go overboard with color, but adding a few pops or a bright or bold hues can really bring the space to life and tie everything together. If you have neutral colors for your furniture and walls, you can add color with pillows, art and accessories.
For drapes, choose the dominant color of the biggest piece of furniture in the room.
If you’re installing new flooring, choose a color that’s slightly darker than the walls. If you’re repainting, go with a color that’s a little brighter than the flooring.
These three simple tips can help you create the perfect living space that encourages conversation, is clutter-free and feels welcoming as soon as you walk through the door. Don’t forget to incorporate your personality into your space by choosing décor, colors and a style that match your lifestyle.
